Where to stay in Panama City Beach

The official map splits Panama City Beach into five areas, from the quiet West End to Grand Lagoon at the state park. Stay in Pier Park if you want to walk to restaurants and the city pier, in Open Sands for beachfront hotels with lazy rivers, and in Grand Lagoon for Shell Island and boat tours. For a week with a kitchen, look at condos.

The areas come from the Visit Panama City Beach map, which draws no exact borders, so we placed each hotel between the landmarks it names. Walking times to 600 Pier Park Drive are our own estimates from OpenStreetMap routing, without checking sidewalks or crossings. Anything over 45 minutes we call a drive.

Visit Panama City Beach calls it a "quiet stretch of beach with few high rise buildings". Camp Helen State Park is at the western end, by Lake Powell.

The one hotel we list here, Comfort Inn & Suites, is on Panama City Beach Parkway, not on the beach. Expedia puts the beach about a 19-minute walk away. For a stay on the sand in the West End, look at vacation rentals.

Named after the shopping and entertainment district next to the Russell-Fields City Pier. City lifeguards watch the beach beside the pier from April 1 to September 30, 10 am–6 pm, and Dog Beach is next to the pier.

When a condo makes more sense

Condos are rented out by their owners or by rental managers. A condo gives you a kitchen and more space for a week or longer; a hotel is simpler for a few nights. Condo rules depend on the building and often on the unit.

Taxes and fees

What comes on top of the room rate

Florida charges 6% sales tax on stays, and Bay County adds a 1% surtax that the state collects with it. On top comes Bay County's 5% tourist development tax in the ZIP codes that cover Panama City Beach. That makes 12% on a typical stay. Required fees, such as cleaning fees, count as part of the rent and are taxed too.

Many hotels add a resort fee or charge for parking, and condos add cleaning and registration fees. The hotel details above show what each one charges.
