Panama City Beach vs. Destin

Destin is about 42 miles west of Panama City Beach by road, a 65-minute drive without traffic. We priced hotels in both on Expedia for the same three nights in January and July 2027. Each time, the lowest price we found in Panama City Beach was below the lowest in Destin. We haven't compared beach rules or Crab Island.

The same nights in both towns

We searched both towns on Expedia for the same three one-night stays, sorted by price, and kept only hotels. The table shows the cheapest hotel and the middle price (median) of the hotels Expedia showed with a price.

The cheapest Destin hotels were Days Inn by Wyndham Destin ($62, January 13), Comfort Inn & Suites Destin near Henderson Beach ($207, July 14) and Fairfield Inn & Suites by Marriott Destin ($297, July 17). Expedia placed all three in Destin itself, not elsewhere in its wider search area. In Panama City Beach the cheapest hotel cost $46 on January 13, $157 on July 14 and $188 on July 17. Of those three, only the July 14 one, Candlewood Suites Panama City Beach Pier, is on our hotel list; the other two are rated below 8.5 out of 10 on Expedia, our minimum.

In both towns July had far fewer hotels with a one-night price than January; we didn't check whether the rest were sold out or need a longer stay. On the Saturday, Expedia's Destin list loaded only part of its results, so treat that row with care. Medians here cover the hotels we recorded with a price on that night (in January only those up to about $280), rounded to the dollar. They describe one search each, not average prices for either town; our cheap-hotels page uses only the hotels on our list that had a price on all three nights, so its medians differ.

What Panama City Beach has

If you pick Panama City Beach

Shell Island, reachable only by boat, lies across the pass from St. Andrews State Park. Pier Park, an open-air shopping and entertainment center, faces the Russell-Fields City Pier across Front Beach Road. St. Andrews charges $8 a car with 2–8 people; Henderson Beach State Park in Destin charges $6. Both open from 8 am to sundown. Since May 15, 2026, every visitor to Henderson Beach needs a day-use reservation; book it with Florida State Parks before you go.
