St. Andrews State Park

The state park at the east end of Panama City Beach costs $8 per car with two to eight people, or $4 if you drive in alone, and is open from 8 am to sunset every day of the year. You come for the Gulf beach, snorkeling in its two swimming areas, fishing from the pier and jetties, and the ferry to Shell Island. Part of the campground is a construction zone.

Things to do

Beach, jetties and the pier

The park doesn't say how long to plan for. If you take the Shell Island ferry, its schedule decides the length of your day.

Before you swim, read up on beach flags and rip currents.

Swim
Two swimming areas: the Gulf beach, with waves, and a shallow pool behind the jetty that the park's brochure calls protected. Boardwalks lead to the beach from two parking areas. The park doesn't publish whether lifeguards are on duty
Snorkel
Allowed in both swimming areas, according to the park, so you can snorkel from shore with your park entry. The park points to the rock jetties for marine life. Buy gear at the concession stores or bring your own
Fish
From the park's two fishing piers, one of them on Grand Lagoon by the boat ramp, the jetties and the beach. The park says you need a Florida saltwater fishing license; FWC exempts some anglers, such as children under 16 and Florida residents 65 or older. No spearfishing inside the park
Scuba
Dive in groups of at least two, fly a diver-down flag and be out of the water an hour before sunset
Shell Island
The park's concession runs a ferry to the island from the Pier Store
Rent a kayak or pontoon
The concession rents kayaks (in season) and pontoon boats
Restrooms and showers
Restrooms with changing areas, and outdoor showers at each day-use parking area
Picnic
Three picnic areas, at the jetties, the Gulf pier and the boat basin, and four pavilions, first come, first served
Walk
Two trails of about half a mile each: Heron Pond Trail through pine flatwoods toward Sandy Point, and Gator Lake Trail with a lake overlook

Dogs and accessibility

Dogs, boardwalks and beach wheelchairs

Pets aren't allowed on the park's beach. In the campground and other areas where they're allowed, they must be on a hand-held leash no longer than 6 feet. Service animals are exempt. The ferry to Shell Island doesn't take pets either.

Raised boardwalks lead to the beach and to the jetty lookout. The concession lends powered and floating beach wheelchairs for free at the Jetty Store and Pier Store while you leave a driver's license or ID; reserve the park's EcoRover beach wheelchair ahead. For the park's own beach wheelchairs, ask at the ranger station.
